Sygnet vs Rossum

By Sygnet Research. Written by Sygnet, sourced, checked before publication.

Rossum and Sygnet both do intelligent document processing, but they aim at different buyers: Rossum is an enterprise platform built around transactional finance and operations documents, with deep ERP plumbing and workflow tooling; Sygnet is an API-first extraction platform for teams who want zero-shot extraction from any document type, with per-field confidence and provenance, and who care about EU hosting. This page is written by Sygnet, so read the Rossum sections with that in mind: everything below about Rossum is linked to its own site, documentation, or a reputable review source, and where a fact was not publicly available we say so instead of filling the gap. If you process a steady diet of invoices and purchase orders into SAP or Coupa, Rossum is probably the stronger fit, and we say why.

Primary document typesPositioned around transactional business documents, primarily invoices, purchase orders and order confirmations, extending to order management, customs clearance and quality-assurance workflows (ERP Research)Any document type, including contracts, identity documents, payslips, medical reports and statutes
Setup and trainingReads documents when layouts vary without building templates or business rulesets, and adapts to different document styles without new templates (Rossum); proprietary LLM that learns from user feedback over time (Rossum)Zero-shot: describe the fields you want, or let schema inference propose them. No per-layout training step
Extraction approachUses a proprietary Transactional Large Language Model, Rossum Aurora, trained on millions of business documents (Dealroom)Multimodal model reading the page directly (OCR vs VLM)
Confidence and provenanceAutomated field extraction with confidence scoring (TopReviewed). Public detail on bounding-box coordinates in API output was not something we could confirm from the sources we foundPer-field confidence scores plus bounding-box field-level provenance on every value
ValidationExtracted data is cross-checked against business rules and master data before posting downstream (ERP Research)Validation rules per field plus cross-document checks (for example a name on an ID against a name on a payslip)
Review workflowHuman-in-the-loop review queues for low-confidence captures, with routing for approval or exception handling based on configurable logic (TopReviewed)Human review routed only when confidence falls below your threshold (confidence thresholds)
Deployment and hostingTurnkey SaaS, low-code, cloud-native (Rossum); review sites list SaaS as the deployment type (TrustRadius). Region choice is not something we could verify publiclyEU-hosted on Google Cloud europe-west1 (Security)

Where Rossum is strong

Rossum has been at this since 2017 and it shows in the parts of the job that are not extraction. The company was founded in Prague by three AI PhD students (Dealroom), and the product has grown into a full document lifecycle platform: documents arrive by email, API, scanner, shared drive, EDI or PEPPOL, get read, cross-checked against master data, and posted into downstream systems such as ERPs (ERP Research).

That breadth matters for accounts payable. Master data matching, duplicate detection, approval routing and ERP connectors are unglamorous work that takes a long time to build well. Rossum also puts the configuration in business hands: the platform is described as designed to be managed by business users rather than the IT team (Rossum), with built-in reporting and dashboards that drill down into users, queues, document types and fields.

Reviewers back up the operational side. G2 reviewers rate Rossum's support highly for responsiveness, and describe its AI-powered data extraction as accurate and efficient (G2). If your problem is "invoices from a thousand suppliers need to land correctly in SAP, with an audit trail and a team of reviewers," Rossum is a credible answer and you should look at it seriously.

Where Sygnet is strong

Sygnet is narrower and more opinionated. It is an intelligent document processing platform and API built for zero-shot extraction: you send a document and a schema, or let Sygnet infer the schema, and you get JSON back. There is no per-layout training phase and no template library to maintain, which matters when your document mix is long-tailed rather than concentrated in invoices. Lease agreements, company statutes, medical reports and bank statements all go through the same endpoint.

Two design choices drive everything else. First, per-field confidence with bounding-box provenance: every extracted value carries a score and a location on the page, so a reviewer can verify in seconds and so you can set thresholds per field rather than per document. Human review is routed only when confidence is low. Second, validation as a first-class feature: field-level rules plus cross-document checks, which is where most real errors surface.

On the compliance side, Sygnet is hosted in the EU (Google Cloud europe-west1) and does not train on customer documents. Pricing is per document. Sygnet is in early access, which is an honest limitation: fewer integrations, less production mileage, and a smaller feature surface than an established enterprise suite.

Which one for which team

  • Enterprise AP with a fixed ERP stack. If your workflow is invoices and POs into SAP, Coupa, NetSuite or Workday, Rossum's prebuilt connectors and AP-specific features (Capterra) will get you further, faster, than wiring extraction yourself.
  • Long-tail document mix. Law firms, notaries, insurers and due-diligence teams handling dozens of document types with no stable layouts get more from zero-shot extraction with schema inference. See contract analysis or M&A due diligence.
  • Engineering teams building a product. If documents flow through your own application and you need JSON, webhooks and confidence scores rather than a review UI and queue manager, an API-first tool is the lighter dependency. Our build vs buy notes cover the trade-off.
  • Low or uneven volume. One G2 reviewer describes Rossum as "very expensive for small amounts of documents" (G2), and the minimum contract length is one year (V7 comparison). Per-document pricing suits spiky volume better.
  • Strict EU data requirements. If your legal team needs a named EU region and a no-training commitment in writing, check both vendors' current terms directly; Sygnet publishes its position on security.

FAQ

Is Rossum template-free, and does that make it equivalent to zero-shot?

Not quite the same thing. Rossum reads documents with varying layouts without templates or business rulesets (Rossum), and Aurora was trained on millions of business documents (Dealroom). That strength is concentrated in transactional document types. Zero-shot with schema inference targets document types the model was never specifically tuned for. Both avoid templates; the coverage differs.

What does Rossum actually cost?

Capterra lists the Starter plan at $18,000 per year (Capterra), and higher plans are custom-quoted, with volume, integrations, SSO and extensions determining the final cost (G2). We are not going to quote figures for the upper tiers, because the public numbers come from third parties rather than Rossum. Ask for a quote against your real volume. Sygnet's per-document rates are on its pricing page.

Can I test both on my own documents?

Yes. Rossum offers a free trial where you create an account and process your first documents (Rossum). Sygnet is in early access, so access is granted rather than self-serve. Run the same fifty awkward documents through both, score field-level accuracy, and count how many need human eyes. That test beats any comparison table, including this one. The ROI calculator helps turn those counts into money.
